Around seven hundred people gathered at the Centenary Pavilion of Leeds United to join in the Founding Assembly of Leeds Citizens. The Diocese of Leeds is a founding partner of Leeds Citizens and the Justice and Peace Commission is also a member. The date was deliberately chosen to show how people in Leeds have come together since the bombings of ten years ago in London.
The Leeds Diocese is obviously a lot wider than Leeds. However, such an important initiative deserves the support of both the Diocese and the Justice and Peace Commission. Is this model of bringing communities together to enact change for the ‘Common Good’ one that could work in other areas in our diocese? – So far, it has certainly been successful in bringing together all manner of churches, mosques, temples and people of no faith in Leeds.
